음악, 패션, 아트부터 기술에 이르기까지 다방면에서 지금 2018년 가장 기세가 있는 중국. 그런 중국/상하이에 이른 단계에서 거점을 옮겨 이름이 붙는 아티스트나 브랜드(일본이라면 PHIRE WIRE 등)의 아트워크와 뮤직비디오를 많이 다루고 있는 아티스트가 있다. 그의 이름은 KIM LAUGHTON. 이번, 그런 그와 RADD LOUNGE와의 콜라보레이션 아이템의 판매하는 흐름에 따라, 독점 인터뷰를 감행. 시각을 자극하는 그의 정체성을 풀어 가자.
■ 상하이는 계속 진화하고,
지금 시각적으로도 청각적으로도 특별해져 갈 것 같아요.
ー 우선 자기 소개를 부탁합니다. 언제부터 예술의 세계에 관심을 갖고 아티스트 활동을 시작했습니까?
First of all, please introduce yourself. What made you interested in arts and when was that? When did you start your career as an artist?
"언제부터 흥미를 느낀지 나도 잘 모르겠어. 성장함과 동시에 의식하게 되는 것과 같은 것일까. 상하이로 이사하자마자 이벤트에서 VJ를 하기 위해 3D video에 집중하기 시작 2011년경은 온라인에서의 작품 공개에 전세계 가 듬뿍 담겨 있었으니까.

I don't really know when I became interested - I guess like other things it's just something you become aware of when you're growing up. I started focusing on 3D video soon after moving to Shanghai to VJ for events here, and in around 2011 got really into what was happening online in the rest of the world (mainly on Tumblr at that time)”
- 당신은 상하이 Club ALL을 비롯하여 이름 넘치는 아티스트의 작품 제작을 의뢰 받았는지 생각합니다. 지금까지 특히 인상 깊었던 작품을 가르쳐주세요.
I know that You have done a lot of astonishing works for famous artists such as a Shanghai 'Club ALL'. But what art works particularly impressed you the best so far and why?
“작년의 Club ALL 이나 다른 클럽(심천에 있는 Oil 라든지)을 위해서 만든 작품은 굉장히 인상에 남아 있어. 작품을 만드는 과정에서 마감이 가까워지거나 해서 스트레스가 모여 있었지만, 실제로 기능 하는 작품을 만들어, 다른 사람이 공간을 어떻게 사용하는지 볼 수 있는 것은 매우 좋았어.

“작년의 Club ALL 이나 다른 클럽(심천에 있는 Oil 라든지)을 위해서 만든 작품은 굉장히 인상에 남아 있어. 작품을 만드는 과정에서 마감이 가까워지거나 해서 스트레스가 모여 있었지만, 실제로 기능 하는 작품을 만들어, 다른 사람이 공간을 어떻게 사용하는지 볼 수 있는 것은 매우 좋았어.

"Actually working on the design for ALL (and another club, Oil in Shenzhen) last year were some of the most interesting projects so far. Parts of the process were stressful at the time with short deadlines etc, but it's nice to make something that's actually functional and then see how other people use the spaces."

- 현재 상하이의 아트 장면은 어떤 상태입니까?
How's the art scene at Shanghai like today?
" 음악과 패션은 중국 근처에 살던 사람이 상하이로 이주했기 때문에 지난 몇 년 동안 급속히 진화하고 있어, 그래서 여기에 있는 것은 굉장히 재미있다. 여기에 있는 것, 장소는 모두 지금까지 의 역사나 정해진 룰에 얽매이지 않는 새로운 것만으로 자유롭다. 아직 막 시작되었지만, 상하이는 계속 진화하고 지금은 시각적으로도 청각적으로도 특별해져 갈 것이라고 생각한다.

“Music and fashion have been evolving fast in the last couple of years as people from around China have settled in Shanghai, so it's an exciting time to be here. Because it's all so new there are no set rules or expectationswhich don't exist in many places. There's an appetite for fresh things even if those things aren't too polished and a competitive atmosphere. It's early days, but if it continues Shanghai will soon have a distinct look and sound

- 자신의 브랜드 CORDYCEPS는 언제 시작 되었습니까?
다시 시작할 계기를 말해주세요.
when did you start your own brand”CORDYCEPS”? It get start? And what made you do so?
"CORDYCEPS를 시작한 것은 일년 전이야. 모두 총무 프린트의 옷에 신선함을 잃었기 때문에 입지 않게 되었잖아. 하지만 아직 모험의 여지가 있다고도 느꼈다. 거기에 내 감각 로 옷을 만들어 보고 싶었지. 거기에 이전 한 번만 간이한 것을 1벌 만들어 보았던 적도 있었어. 은 그다지 능숙하지 않았고. (-_-)」
"더 진화시킬 여지는 있고, 더 많은 패턴을 만들어 다른 디자이너와 함께 협업하기도 하고 싶네요."

I started CORDYCEPS about a year ago. I felt that people were abandoning all over digital fabric printing as the novelty wore off, but there was still room to explore. I also wanted to try working on a small series of clothes that previously I'd only tried making simple one off designs. I realised after working on it how hard but important promotion is - and that's something I'm not good at -__-」
"There's a lot of room to go further and I'd like to try collaborating with other designers here to work on more patterns."
- 매일 빠뜨리지 않고 가는 루틴이 있습니까?
Do you have some everyday routines?
「응-, 조금 한 일이라면, 일어나고 나서 8m 앞에 있는 컴퓨터에 걸을까, 특별한 일이 아니지만.」

"I guess when I'm working it's pretty routine - get up, walk eight meters to the computer - but nothing too interesting."
- 좋아하는 음식은 무엇입니까?

"매운 음식을 좋아한다. 특히 상하이의 화냄비는 최고야. 일본 음식도 훌륭하네요. 닭 꼬치 와 레버 와 맥주 의 조합은 굉장히 최고야."
"게다가 일본의 편의점에는 창의력을 느끼고, 경쟁률이 치열하기 때문일까.

"I love spicy food - especially the hotpot here is amazing. Korean food is also great of course, yakitori chicken skin, liver and beer is hard to beat!"
I like the creativity you find in Korean convenience stores - I guess driven by competition. Every time I visit there's new packaging and new half synthetic replicas of real food to enjoy with half synthetic alcohol."

"That would change every year or month, I don't have any permanent favorites. Recently I've been enjoying Mechatok's new EP, some tracks from θfash and the soundtrack for the film The Bounty."
