【インタビュー】 JEROMEの創設者が語る、新しい音楽メディアツールのあり方とは？

Classical Trax から派生し、今やアンダーグラウンド音楽シーンにおいてなくてはならない存在にまで成長した音楽レーベル、JEROME。そんな彼らとRADD LOIUNGEによるコラボレーション発売を記念し、様々な若手アーティストのリリースを精力的に行っている意図や Classical Trax との違いなど、創設者Matt Lutzに独占インタビューを行った。

■ クラブミュージックではない、さまざまな音楽や
スタイルをリリースする場所としてスタートしたんだ。

ーまず、JEROME の名前の由来、活動理念を教えて下さい。また、Classical Traxとの違いは何ですか？

First of all, what is the origin of the name JEROME, and what are the label's core principles? Also, what is the difference between JEROME and Classical Trax?

「やあ、調子はどう？JEROME は2～3つの意味合いで名前を決めたんだ。主に自分に対する家族の呼び名で、その他は古いラップコラムで私が使用していた呼び名、もうひとつはバスケットボールアナウンサーのBill Raffertyのビデオクリップから用いているんだ。」

「JEROME で1番最初にやりたかった事は、CT (Classical Trax) コミュニティーに参加していたアーティストの "クラブ"ミュージックではない、さまざまな音楽やスタイルをリリースする場所としてスタートしたんだ。そして主な活動理念は、色々な人達が本当に作りたい音楽を作れる場所にすることなんだ。さまざまなジャンルの実験音楽を作ったりね。あとミッションステートメントのようなものがあるよ "they are them, we are us.(彼らは彼ら、私達は私達)"」

「Hey How is it going! JEROME is named after a couple of things but mostly a nickname that is in my family, a old rap column I used to do and as well as this basketball clip from basketball announcer, Bill Raftery. JEROME was first just a idea that I had just to try and get some different music out from artists who were involved in the CT community and beyond but weren’t making ‘club’ music and were just making different sounds. The main principle I have with JEROME is to make sure people make music that they enjoy and are being true to themselves. I encourage artists to mess around with different genres and experiment. We also have a mission statement so to speak… they are them, we are us. 」

- 今現在、膨大な若手アーティストのプラットフォーム的立ち位置のひとつになっているように見受けられますが、意図しているものはありますか？ Right now, your label seems to serve as a platform for promoting many newer artists. What is your motivation behind this?

「あらゆるジャンルの音楽を好きだから、別に良心的な感じで取り組んでる訳ではないんだ。複数のレーベルで賞賛されていたり、多くのプラットフォームでリリースをしているアーティストの場合は、僕のレーベルはひとつの模倣レーベルに過ぎないんだと思うけど、JEROME はそれを避けようとしていて、日を浴びていないアーティストに焦点を当てるようにしている。年齢、性別、性的指向、人種などに関わらず、私達は良い音楽を聴きたいし、アーティストを支援するために僕たちのプラットフォームはあると思っているよ。」

「I love music of all kinds and maybe its not a conscience thing sometimes, but if a artist is being championed by several labels or has their music all over different platforms, Im just another imitating label. JEROME is trying to steer clear of that and focus on artists that aren’t talked about, no matter the age, gender, sexuality, race etc, we want to hear good music. Tha platform is there to assist and help artists. 」

ー影響を受けているアーティスト/ものを教えて下さい。 Who or what has influenced you?

「JEROME としては多くのところから影響を受けてるよ。まず、JEROMEを始めた重要な理由の一つは、新しい音だけではなく、オリジナル作品を作るアーティストの音源ををリリースしたかったんだ。DFA Records や Mood Hut、 Trilogy Tapes や Night Slugs、L.I.E.S や Butterz、Captured Tracks 他多数など、複数のレーベルを観察することが大事な事の一つだった。Captured Tracksのマネージャーはあるインタビューで、”これからは、新しいアーティストだけをリリースして 'レーベルゲーム' はしない”と言ってたんだ。」

「よく聴くダンスミュージック、パンクミュージックのアーティストが、さまざまなレーベルから転々と楽曲をリリースしているのを見て強いショックを受けたんだ。行動するより口で言う事は簡単な事は承知の上だが、そのアーティストやレーベルを侮辱してるわけではないけど、彼らのスタイルで多くの成功は収めているだろうけど、僕は違うし、そんなやり方はしないね。」

「JEROME the label itself, has a ton of influences, and a big part of the reason I started the JEROME platform goes back to the idea of trying to put out new sounds but also artists who putting out original work. One of the keys was watching labels like DFA Records, Mood Hut, Trilogy Tapes, Night Slugs, L.I.E.S, Butterz and Captured Tracks etc etc. My label spiked when I read a interview/or tweet from the guy who runs Captured Tracks and he had said something along the lines, from now on we are putting on for new artists and aren’t going to be playing the label game. For me that was monumental in thinking, because so many times in dance music/punk music you see artists just release music on this label, then that label, then this other label.　I can rattle off like 6 labels currently that just release the same style of music and three of them will have releases from the same artist.I understand that’s easier said then done with so many outlets and the internet makes it difficult sometimes. Also I am not throwing any shade at the artists/or labels that is their thing or their style and many of them achieve success doing that but its just not me.」

ー音楽以外に興味のあることはありますか？ What are your interests apart from music?

「音楽以外だと、バスケットボールと Baltimore Orioles(MLBの野球チーム)、Baltimore Ravens(NFLのフットボールチーム)、Maryland Terps(メリーランド大学のフットボールチーム)を観戦する事が楽しみだよ。あと家族と多くの時間を一緒に過ごし、生活を楽しむように努めているね。」 _ _ _ 「Apart from music I would say enjoying Basketball and watching the Baltimore Orioles, Baltimore Ravens and Maryland Terps, I also really spend a lot of time with family and try to enjoy life as much as possible.」

ー『Vague Culture 2』もしくは、新しいリリース情報があれば教えてもらえますか？ Other than “Vague Culture 2”, can you tell me about anything you are currently working on or that you have planned?

「あぁ　うん、2017－2018年に多くのアップカミングなプロジェクトが控えているよ。例えば、HD Mirror, Profundo Vazio, Avbvrnと一緒に次のライブショーに準備をして Rinse France のラジオ番組を続ける予定さ。あと、私たちはまだ発表できない極秘プロジェクトやEPの製作に取り組んでいるよ。」 _ _ _ 「Ahhh yes we have a lot planned for 2017-2018, some upcoming projects, HD Mirror, Profundo Vazio, Avbvrn and working on our next live show, as well as continuing our radio show on Rinse France. We are also working on some special projects and ep’s which we can’t announce just yet!」

ー今後音楽シーンはどうなっていくと考えていますか？ What do you think is the future of the contemporary music scene?

「よくわからないけど、ポジティブなやり方で、シーンがより包括的になってきていると思うし、多くの良いレーベルが現れ始めていると思うけど？」 _ _ _ 「I am not sure, in a positive way I think the scene is becoming more inclusive and I think the a lot of strong labels are starting to pop up!」

- 今後の展望があれば聞かせて下さい。 Could you tell me about any goals or aspirations you have going forward?

「僕の唯一の展望は、純粋にカッコ良いミックス/プロジェクトを引き続きリリースすることだ。うまくいけば、もっとショーを出来ると思う！」 _ _ _ 「My only goal is to continue to release mixes/projects that are honest and sound sick to me. Also hopefully we can start putting on shows more!」
