過去Visionist名義で活躍し、現在はLouis Carnellとして活動する彼の最新プロジェクト、'111'リングのリリースに伴い、レコーディング・ミュージック、ライブ・パフォーマンス、ムービング・イメージ＆彫刻を駆使した、最新のコラボレーション・プロジェクトについて語っていただきました
■ タイトルの‘111’は、ヒエラルキーのない環境を意味し、私たちが誰とどのように協力し、どこに共通点を見出すことができるか
ー まず、今回のプロジェクト‘111’とは何ですか？アーティストの選考方法も教えてください
First of all, what is ‘111’? How were the artists selected?
「今までレコード・レーベルを運営し、フェスティバルのイベントを開催してきた。もちろん、レーベルのおかげで、さまざまな形で探求し、調査し、コミュニケーションすることができました」
「タイトルの‘111’は、ヒエラルキーのない環境を意味し、私たちが誰とどのように協力し、どこに共通点を見出すことができるかを問いかけ、私が「希望の旅」と呼ぶ約束した繰り返しのサイクルで処理される ‘1’は、始点であり終点でもある」
「今回、15人の音楽アーティストと2人のヴィジュアル・アーティスト、合計17人とコラボレーションをすることにしたんだ。これは私のライブショーとリンクしていて、私の誕生日にちなんで ‘17’と呼んでいます」
「音楽アーティストを選んだ理由については、長年にわたって私にインスピレーションを与えてくれた友人や人々と仕事をする機会であり、また新しいアーティストを発見する機会でもあった。、異なるステージにいるアーティストが混在し、マルチ・インストゥルメンタリストやヴォーカリストとコラボレーションをすることが重要だったんだ」

「I’ve always been interested in curating & collaboration, I’ve run record labels, put on events with festivals & of course my records have allowed me to explore, investigate and communicate in multiple forms」
「‘111’ in its title refers to an environment without hierarchy, questioning how & with whom we collaborate, & where we can find commonality, processed in repeated cycles of promise which I call ‘hope journeys’ - ‘1’ is both a beginning & ending point」
「With the record I allowed myself to be determined by number signifiers - I chose to work with 15 musical artists & 2 visual artists making 17 in total which is linked to my live show, which is called ‘17’ in relation to the day of my birth」
「In terms of why I chose the musical artists, it was an opportunity for me to work with friends & people who have inspired me over the years & discover new artists to me, getting back into the practice of being a fan of music. It was important to have a mixture of artists at different stages of their journey & work with multi-instrumentalists and vocalists」
ー このプロジェクトでは、ジュエリーデザイナーのJordan Jon Hodgsonと3 つの指輪を、Felix Villiersとはテーブルを制作していますが、これらを制作した意図は何ですか?
You worked with jewelry designer Jordan Jon Hodgson on three rings and a table with Felix Villiers for this project. What was your intention in creating them?
「私にとって音楽を超えた創造的な世界を見せることが重要だと思っています」
「私は常にモノに対する好奇心と野心を持っていて、さまざまな相互作用や経験、突破口を見つけることを楽しんでいる。どのプロジェクトでも、可能な限りこのような環境を作りたいと思っています。過去には、William Francis Green(Stone Island, Givenchy, Burberry)とレコードスリーブカバーを共同制作し、Heliot Emilとカプセル・コレクションを作りました」
「今はシルバーのオブジェを探求しています。 ‘111’テーブルは、ステージデザインとインスタレーションへの私の探求の始まりであり、リングは、周期的なパターンを完璧に表現し、もうひとつの具体的なエンゲージメントを提供しています」
「リングデザインのコンセプトは、それぞれのリングが過去のイマジネーションであることです」

「It’s important to me to show my creative world beyond music」
「I always had a curiosity & ambition for objects & I enjoy finding different interactions and experiences and openings. With every project when possible I want to have this environment. In the past I created a vinyl sleeve covering with Willaim Francis Green(Stone Island, Givenchy, Burberry) and a capsule collection with Heliot Emil. I’m now exploring silver objects. The '111' table is a start of my exploration into stage design & installation & the rings are a perfect representation of cyclic patterns & delivering another tangible engagement」

ー 過去にあなたは Acne Studios、Kenzo、Heliot Emil、Per Götesson、ShowStudioなどのプレゼンテーション用の楽曲をプロデュースしていますが、もともとファッション業界との繋がりはありましたか？それに付随し、現在のファッション業界について、どのような考えや思いを持っているか教えてください
In the past, you have produced music for presentations for Acne Studios, Kenzo, Heliot Emil, Per Götesson & ShowStudio, etc. Did you originally have any connection with the fashion industry? What are your thoughts and feelings about the current fashion industry?
「ファッション業界で働くことになった最初のきっかけは、Fashion Eastとつながりのあるブランドでスコアを担当したことで、そこから世界中のさまざまなブランドと仕事をするようになった」
「自分の音楽とこのクリエーションを組み合わせるのは自然なことだと思ったし、没入感と感情を刺激するものを提供できる可能性を感じました」
「新卒のコレクションや、 アイデアにもっとリスクを取れる新しく設立されたブランドには、いつまでも惹かれます。メゾンからは、90年代後半から2000年代前半のMcQueenやHussein Chalayanのようなシアターをもっと見たいな」
「ロンドンに住んでいると、インディペンデントなブランドをサポートする店が少ない。これを変えることに重点を置いてほしいと思っている。ブランドが独自の店舗を持つには家賃が高すぎるかもしれないが、ブランド同士が協力し、消費者との物理的な体験を可能にするスペースを共有することを私は望んでいます」

「My first engagement with working in the fashion industry was doing the scores with brands linked to Fashion East, from there I continued to work with a variety of Brands from around the world」
「Combining my music with this craft felt natural, giving me the potential to provide something immersive & emotional」
「I’m forever drawn to graduate collections and newly established brands where more risk can be taken in the ideas. From the main houses I’d like to see more theatre similar to McQueen & Hussein Chalayan of the late 90’s/ early 2000’s」
「Living in London there are not enough stores supporting independent brands. I'd like to see an emphasis on changing this. Where rent may be too much for a brand to have its own store, I'd like to see brands come together and share spaces allowing that physical experience with the consumer」
ー 最後に、あなたにとって望ましい未来とは何ですか？
Lastly, What is your desired future for yourself?
「今年は、3人のアーティストによるキュレーション・ミュージック・ナイト‘111’をヨーロッパ、そしてできればアジアで開催することに重点を置いており、また、今年はコラボレーション・パフォーマンスも始めたいと思っています」
「モノのデザインやプロデュースでのコラボレーションも続けていくつもりだ」
「最後に、今年は私の名前で初めてソロの音楽をMuteからリリースする予定だよ」

「This year my focus is on taking my ‘111’ events around Europe and hopefully Asia, these are curated music nights which consist of 3 artists. I will also look to intiate a collaborative performance presentation this year」
「I will continue to collaborate on designing & producing objects」
「Finally, I’ll release my first solo music under my name this year with Mute」
