Who are you and what is Trendergarten HD?**

 「私はId Xanthrax(Instagram:@id_xanthrax)と申します。

「I’m Id Xanthrax (ig: @id_xanthrax), an online pseudonymous artist and thinker, working across multiple mediums. Trendergarten HD is many things: a lifestyle brand, manifesto, advertising agency — mostly its a container I’m using to distill the many modes I work in and to world-build. Aesthetic areas of interest here are the hyper-dadaist memetics of our  post virality social media environment in contrast to forms of self optimization ie. post-looksmaxxer, bimbo-feminism, post-humanism. I think these subcultural mutations— more broadly — and the beliefs they espouse, though often hated publicly are assumed by many individuals privately. That’s what makes them a kind of punk or neo-punk, and a form of visibility that’s very interesting to me. The activities of the brand will take many forms, one of those being the capsule collection I’m releasing with Radd Lounge, which comes with clothing and a zine, but also a stream of video content and online performances.

Where does the name come from?

_ _ _

「The name comes from an early AI generation which had jumbled lettering, and many of the letters were not quite letters. This neography looked like it spelled “trendergarten” to me. One day it occurred to me that the name was really interesting, because kindergarten is where we form many of our habits and ideas about the world. Nowadays, youth are institutionalized online via trends and memetics. Part of what interests me in my practice is the state of childhood and early life formation in our era. The HD element doesn’t necessarily stand for high-definition, but if you wanted to point to that, it would connote the digital, the hypervisible, the hypervisual.

Your practice spans sculpture, installation, blockchain, video, advertising. How do you hold all of that together?

_ _ _

「It’s not really a choice. Part of what holds it together is a through line of register and voice — the fact that many of these things come from me specifically. I’m a very hands-on artist, I really don’t outsource any aspect of my work. Each medium is something I approach with my own hands, sometimes in a primitive or bare-bones way. What I find interesting about approaching digital image production — and manufacturing too — in a primitive way is that it renders a kind of expressionism within what’s often quite rigid-feeling media. Holding it together can be difficult at times. Part of this project is a focus and distillation of the many projects and ideas I’ve had into a singular world.

You’ve described your work as “expanding vernaculars of vandalism and theft.” What does that mean?

_ _ _

「I’m interested in influence as a form of parasitism, and the dynamics of parasitism in our current iteration of capital. The system is basically founded upon theft: the theft of time, labour, intellectual property, and data. Instead of critiquing this from an outside perspective, I’m interested in embracing these dynamics as fundamental to the human condition. I don’t believe in intellectual property, to be honest. Nowadays everything is basically there to be stolen or used — and when you do that, you’re sampling more than just the content, you’re sampling the form itself.

「The vandalism part comes from a more personal position of growing up doing graffiti and street art. That turned into public happenings and installations, throwing public events, and exhibiting in non-gallery or non-institutional spaces, as well as invading commercial space in ways that are unexpected.」

「All of these instincts are interesting to me, including notions of vandalism as they relate to “getting up” as a graffiti artist or as a brand. I think these things have merged today into social media dynamics, memetics, and viral digital creation. Platforms have taken over many fundamental institutions we used to take for granted. The only way to subvert or find subculture within that is to understand hijacking attention within the digital context.」

Who are the characters — Souljamaxxer, Cumbomogged, Bender and Trender — and where do they come from?

_ _ _

These characters are spirits or iterations of various energies I’m interested in.

「Souljamaxxer represents, in a demigod sense, a xenomasculine quality — a masculine that is outside of us, something that propels us toward a death drive. The naming convention also points to my love of rap — rap as a kind of accelerated, capitalistic poetry, an accelerative force.」

「Combomogger is a cyclops, hyperbimbo figure who represents the other end of that spectrum — a hyperactive conception of femininity pushed into plasticity, almost inhuman, no longer resembling nature.」

「Bender and Trender are cartoon characters. You’ll hear more about them over time. These things will reveal themselves gradually.」

What is this first collection called and what does it mean?

_ _ _

「The collection is presently untitled, though a tentative working title or slogan for the label would be Become a Monster. It is a call to embrace what is beyond the limitations of the human form or human institutions. It’s a Nietzschean call in the sense of embracing one’s own strangeness and bizarreness.

「It’s about the qualities that make you stand out from the crowd, but also about a kind of self-optimization that isn’t strictly  in service of capital, but  of something deeper and more personal. Not humanism in an old-school way, but embracing new iterations of culture not as defects, but as potential directions toward new surreal utopias.」

The work pulls from internet subcultures — looksmaxxing, body modification, online body horror. Are you inside these worlds or observing them?

_ _ _

「I’d say I’m inside these worlds in some senses. I keep my physical appearance and personal life out of my work, but these subcultures are fascinating and sometimes even positive to me in ways that aren’t always considered.

「I believe todays artist is a sort of anthropologist. I try not to take on personal positions in my work, because I see this as a limitation. I don’t want to sit above or outside these ideas. I want to penetrate them so deeply that it’s no longer clear whether I’m part of them or critiquing them.」

「I think we’re post-critique. The artist is inherently critical now. Even if they’re not, their work is only as important as it is visible. The critical position that used to sit in an ivory tower has largely fallen away. We have to redefine what inside and outside even mean.」

Why does Radd Lounge feel like the right place to launch?

_ _ _

「Radd Lounge seems open to exploring new models for understanding markets and fashion  within internet culture. The gallery system is —  well it’s in a strange state.  Visual art, as we understand it, seems to be getting increasingly anachronistic.. A lot of what circulates in the art world is deeply out of touch. And our ideas of art are changing very rapidly because of AI and the platforms we inhabit daily so I appreciate organizations and institutions who are open and excited about these turbulances.

How does your art practice connect to Trendergarten HD?

_ _ _

「It’s an extension and a container for my work. It’s also a way of distilling many of the things I already do into a single structure.

Where does fashion fit into a practice rooted in the art world?

_ _ _

「Sometimes I think fashion is producing more conceptually rigorous work than the art world is. These categories are becoming blurred to the point where they may no longer be separable.

「I’m interested in dissolving those boundaries so I’m just doing creative work, without needing to define it categorically.」

What do you want Trendergarten HD to become?

_ _ _

「I want it to become a container or vehicle for thinking that others can inhabit. A lifestyle brand that can also be a way for people to engage with the work.

「The lore is shared IP — not entirely mine. A lot of what I do comes from the broader human image project. The goal is to give people something they can inhabit on a level of consumption and creativity.

「It’s about creating a host that others can become parasitic to, in a productive sense.」

What’s next?

_ _ _

「I’m working on more objects, merchandise, and a broader collection of public installation work over the next half of the year with a few exhibitions coming up. Often what I envision or intend for the future ends up at odds with reality, and I think that’s an inherent part of the creative process — of attention, inference, and inhabiting a vision. I look forward to the many ruptures of culture to come.
